Camp is an experiential education like no other. Children and youth learn life lessons, such as independence, leadership, and self-confidence, in an environment designed specifically for them. Camp is made up almost entirely of teachable moments. Through fun and hands-on experiences, campers have opportunities to grow and develop the skills needed to be productive, successful adults. Camp Fire is a non-profit, volunteer based organization dedicated to enriching the lives of children and their families for over 100 years!  Along with traditional camp and club programs, Camp Fire has developed community outreach programs in response to the changing profile of today’s youth and families.  Youth at-risk, children with special needs, and families who need financial assistance find enriching experiences through Camp Fire’s specialized programs.  Camp Fire works to realize the dignity and worth of each individual and to eliminate human barriers based on all assumptions that prejudge individuals. Designed and implemented to reduce sexual, racial, religious, and cultural stereotypes and to foster positive intercultural relationships, in Camp Fire, everyone is welcome.

Compliance with hundreds of standards is required for accreditation by the American Camp Association (ACA). Camp Fire Day Camps meet ACA standards in all areas: health and safety, program quality, staff qualifications, sanitation, and site/facility issues. In addition, Camp Fire Long Beach has its own high standards. All of our staff have intensive pre-camp training. We maintain a low staff-to-camper ratio of 2 adults to each group of approximately 12 children.

Camp Fire Camp Shiwaka offers a wide variety of traditional camp opportunities including a low-element challenge course, archery, fire rings for outdoor cooking, and an outdoor amphitheater for the end of week closing ceremony. Campers earn a variety of nature awards as they learn to value the natural environment. Each day opens and closes at the flagpole with spirited sessions of camp songs, letters delivered from the camp mascot, Mr. Wriggles, and daily announcements. Campers bring a sack lunch on Mondays. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, campers cook their lunches over a campfire. On Thursdays, campers perform skits, cook dinner over the campfire, and then have a traditional evening ceremony in the amphitheater. As the campers settle in to spend the night under the stars, the Day Camp Aides serenade each individual campsite with traditional camp songs. Click here to download the 2017 Camp Catalog for more information.
